Eccleshill Swimming Pool was built in the 1960’s and remains a popular amenity, used by nearly 130,000 people a year.
We were commissioned by the council to undertake the refurbishment of the pool and design an extension to create a new changing village.
Changes to the pool and changing areas were driven by the need to ensure access for people with disabilities and special needs, as well as the desire to make the amenity more appealing to families.
We designed a family friendly changing village open to all, with larger cubicles for families, thus doing away with the awkwardness of changing with children of different sexes.
We also installed an assisted changing suite with hoist, changing beds, accessible wc’s and specialist showers.
The whole village is colour-coded to give visual clues for location and use.
The scheme was described as ‘the jewel in the crown’ of the council’s pool-refurbishment programme, and represented the largest investment in recreation for some time.
